Feeding on trout at Carencro, Louisiana

August 26, 2010

1

Last night was all about a quiet campsite and lighting a fire to cook on. E decided that it was time to eat simply so we broke out the piece of trout that we’d picked up in Austin, at the Wholefoods market they have there.

Black’s barbecue: a real meaty treat

August 24, 2010

It’s like an institution in Texas, only meatier. Barbecue is talked about with the kind of reverence given to ex-Presidents and football (American football, y’all…) but to be honest, our experience with it has been a little so-what, so far.

Release the bats

August 22, 2010

Release the bats, originally uploaded by fatfoodtaxi. We made it to the river in time to watch Austin’s bat population take to the air in search of tasty insect snacks. It kind of made us hungry, so we left and went in search of something less arthropodic for ourselves… and found some tasty plates in… [Read more…]

Some photos from our camping evening at Benbrook Lake, near Fort Worth. Nothing food-related to report: we ate at a fairly second-rate bar which was only salvaged by the fact that the band were brilliant

The Dana-Thomas house

August 14, 2010

1

Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s legendary architect, was commissioned in 1902 to renovate and construct a show-piece house by the Thomas family. We had the chance to stop off there yesterday, in Springfield and I’m glad we did. The house itself has an almost Japanese aspect (as the guide said: although FLW insisted he was never influenced by anuone, he… [Read more…]

Outstanding in Madison’s Troy Gardens

August 13, 2010

1

This was it. After five days of high-tailing it across America’s mid-west to be here in Madison, Wisconsin, we were finally about to participate in the food-art spectacle that is Outstanding In the Field. Jim Denevan, his partner Leah and a troupe of willing assistants have been taking their outdoor dining concept on the road… [Read more…]
